Keep children entertained during the Coronation

Union Jack collage

With the 6th May fast approaching (and hopefully the sunshine too!), the Coronation of King Charles the Third will soon be here. Traditional Coronation celebrations usually include a big street party with family and friends; bunting and flags filling the air, and a table full of cakes, sandwiches and tea as long as the eye can see! As many of us will be excited to sit and watch the Coronation, the little ones in our lives may not be as enthusiastic!

In this blog, we will list some top tips on how to create that excitement and buzz for them; keeping them entertained and enjoying this momentous occasion for the whole day.

Writing letters

For the older children, a wonderful way to make them feel involved and excited about this celebration could be writing a letter. Getting them to sit together as a group and each write a letter of congratulations to our new King could be the perfect way to get them excited about this Coronation. To make things feel extra important and to commemorate this day, why not use our Helix Oxford Colour Gel Pens? They’re perfect for writing whilst still fun and vibrant for the occasion!

Another writing activity children could get excited about is a time capsule! Get them to write a letter to their future selves, talking about everything you have planned for this special day and ask their future selves fun and silly questions! Whilst also keeping them occupied and engaged with the festivities, this can also make for a wonderful memory to look back on when they are older and something they’re sure to always treasure.

Coronation Collages

A popular arts and crafts activity idea is collaging a Union Jack flag! Using tissue paper in red, white and blue, your little ones can rip away and stick on their flag poster. As in the images, simply outline the flag and label the areas according to each colour. Then, using our Helix Pringles glue stick, apply glue to the poster section by section and then they can scrunch up their tissue pieces and stick them straight on! This time-effective and safe activity is great for keeping them busy whilst you’re busy. (They also get to indulge in their naughty side by ripping up the tissue paper!).

Cake Decorating

As is the occasion, there will be lots of yummy, sweet treats around! Get the children involved in some of the preparation on the day with some cookie decorating! There’s nothing kids love more than a food-related activity, and all you need is some red, white and blue icing, chocolate and/or sweets for decoration! From crowns to flags, let them get creative and messy but also enjoy a sense of achievement when presenting their masterpieces to family and friends for you all to enjoy!

Some children just love to be involved in whatever the adults are doing! Therefore, a great idea to keep them engaged during the Coronation and to make watching it even more exciting for them is to create a Coronation Bingo card!

Simple pick a mix of nine or more Royal family members and Coronation staples for them to look out for. Then, however many they spot will equate to a prize of your choice at the end. Click here  to download our Maped Helix Coronation bingo board as seen below!
