Helix resonates with all of us as timeless, classic, trailblazers and brand leaders. We would consider our beautifully British brand as stationery royalty… much like the Royal family and our soon-to-be King!
With the Coronation of King Charles III coming soon this May, we thought there would be no better time to highlight the qualities our new king and stationery royalty Helix have in common. (They’re more alike than you think!)
Synonymous with being British
The Royal family speaks for itself. They are the first people who come to mind whenever the rest of the world thinks of British culture! As the figurehead family of our country, they have remained in the same iconic residences such as Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. This longstanding tradition and their unmistakable trademark style, have created an iconic and timeless image people associate with the Royal Family.
Similarly, to Helix, our company was founded in the UK, Birmingham, and has remained in the West Midlands ever since. Our brand is synonymous with British brands throughout the world as we have been famously labelled as “Helix; the king of compasses” since the 1890s. Along with many new and innovative products and styling, we too remain loyal to our original Helix products that are continually renowned for their timeless efficiency and quality, cementing them as an iconic, British brand.
Long-standing History
Like the Royal Family, the Helix brand has been a firm part of British history for many generations to remember. Just as the Royal family has been a solid part of British history since Alfred the Great in 871, since 1887, everybody has heard of Helix (although at the time was Universal Woodworking).
In the 1870s, education became compulsory and more children than ever were attending school. Therefore, Helix became one of the biggest school instrument suppliers for schools around the country. It would be very likely that the King himself used our Helix products during his education! The King was born in 1947, a small 12 years after Helix Oxford was established and 60 years after the brand itself was built!
Global Recognition
Known globally, Helix is sold in over 60 countries worldwide. It has continually grown exponentially, as by our 25th year, we were already popular overseas with wholesalers and missionary societies in Africa and India. Helix has become a household name for many families all over the world. Both King Charles and Helix have a long-standing relationship with the Commonwealth. Established in 1931, the King has been a proud supporter of the Commonwealth and the billions of people in it for more than four decades. He helps to maintain the Royal Family’s strong connection to member countries through official visits, military patronages and charitable activities.
In comparison, since 1950, Helix has established trade with many countries in the Commonwealth such as Africa, Hong Kong and India. Elsie Lawson, Chairwoman from 1959-68, travelled solo all over the world bringing trade for our brand. She was even awarded an OBE for her services to exports.
Evolving with the times
Both King Charles III and Helix have been able to change and adapt their messages and approach to suit their current climate and the attitudes of people in the modern world. One area in which both King Charles and Helix have found to be of great importance is the environment. We both understand the gravitas behind nurturing and protecting our planet via the choices we make and the items we purchase. King Charles has a long history as an active environmentalist, regularly seen campaigning for conservation, organic farming and tackling climate change.
This fits hand in hand with our Helix Oxford Eco products. Our message for this range is that you can maintain the same great quality products whilst using environmentally friendly content made from recycled materials. We are also striving to reduce our carbon footprint by 1/3 by 2026.
From the British leader of stationery to the British leader of our country, we wish our new King Charles III a successful reign.
