It’s week two of our exciting Summer Super Stars competition – and your challenge is to create an animal collage using any recyclable materials you can find around the house!

You’re free to let your imagination run wild but, for inspiration, we’ve included a guide on how to create a roar-some lion.

Don’t forget to post your creations on Facebook (@MapedHelix) or Instagram (@maped_helix) for a chance to win amazing prizes, including stationery bundles and Alton Towers tickets. Find out more about the competition and how to enter here.

Steps

Step 1

First, gather all the materials for your collage.

You’ll need white and coloured paper and a selection of old newspapers and magazines.

Have a look around the house and in the recycling box for magazines – just make sure your parents have finished reading them!

Step 2

Using scissors, cut the magazine or newspaper pages into strips.

Don’t worry if they aren’t perfectly straight – and think about pointing the ends so they look like strands of hair.

Step 3

Mix your strips up so they are a variety of colours, shapes and textures.

Step 4

Draw the outline of your lion’s face on a white piece of paper – the larger the better.

Using glue, stick your strips around the edge of your lion’s face.

If you are making a different animal, think about where their hair should go.

Step 5

Keep gluing until you are happy with your lion’s mane, overlapping to ensure there are no gaps.

Step 6

Fold a piece of coloured paper in half vertically and then draw half of the lion’s face on one side.

Use your scissors to cut out the shape and unfold the paper to reveal the full face.

Step 7

Using a different coloured paper, cut out eyes, nose, mouth and ears and glue these into position.

Step 8

Use pencils, pens or felt tips to add in detail to the eyes, ears and nose.

What can you think of doing to make your animal standout from the crowd? What expression do they have?

And there you have it, a wonderful animal collage to take pride of place in your home.
